The World of Girls' Manga exhibit and my first academic presentation

$

0

I briefly mentioned the fact that I recently attended an academic conference (symposium, to be exact) in a previous post as an excuse for not blogging for a while, but I figured since my topic and the theme of the symposium are relevant to this blog, why not blog about it? It's okay for me take a moment to gloat about my very first name tag (shown above) and the fact that I got to attend the World of Girls' Manga art exhibit from Kyoto International Manga Museum at the same event, right? (that's a rhetorical question – this is my blog and I'm going to do it anyway!)

Don't worry, just because I presented in an academic setting, I certainly haven't let it go to my head. In fact, it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. For the curious, my paper was titled "From Shōjo to Boys’ Love (BL) and Back Again: Yoshinaga Fumi and the Diversification of Male-Male Romance in Japanese Manga." I won't go into the details of the paper because 1) it will probably bore many of you and 2) I'm planning on presenting a modified version in January which will then go on to be published in a journal somewhere down the track and I don't want anyone stealing my ideas (hah), but I do have something else I'm very keen to discuss...

Namely, the gorgeous full-color World of Girls' Comics book that each and every one of the presenters at the 2-day symposium received, including myself! It's chock-full of gorgeous illustrations and information on early shojo manga artists. I couldn't have asked for a better memento of my first academic presentation.

Though I won't go into too much detail, I just can't help but share some of the exquisite art from this book! Each artist featured in the exhibition has a short biography in both English and Japanese, along with a number of illustrations, of which have been restored using the Kyoto International Manga Museum's special Genga'(Dash) preservation technique.

A lot of these early artists are people I'm only vaguely familiar with, if that, so this book has really opened my eyes to a lot of stunning work that I wouldn't have known otherwise!

This is by the same artist as the image above, Katsuji Matsumoto. Her eyes are kind of derpy looking and I'm not sure what she's doing with her hands, but there's something really appealing about this piece to me.

Many early shojo manga artists, particularly those in the 60s and early 70s, were actually men. I don't think many western fans realize that the popular artist behind the above illustrations, Macoto Takahashi, was actually a man! I love his attention to detail.

Another male artist, Satoo Tomoe, wasn't afraid of drawing war-related illustrations. For better or for worse, any anime/manga-style work involving children will inevitably remind me of Grave of the Fireflies.

There was another piece from the series shown above, Shiroi toroika (White Troika) at the exhibit I attended that really grabbed me, to the point that I think I want to track the original manga down and read it someday. It was drawn by Hideko Mizuno.

Not all of the works included are color illustrations – there are also a number of original manga pages, which I find utterly fascinating. See if you can make out the the differently-colored text portions. I assume these were edits of some kind. This page is from Anasutashia no suteki na otonari (Anastasia's Wonderful Neighbor) by Yukiko Kai.

Of course, this wouldn't be a book about early shojo manga without some crazy shojo window eyes. I'm not particularly fond of the above illustration, but you've gotta admit it's something else! This one's from Aiba Enzeru (My Horse Angel) by Kimiko Uehara.

Last but not least, one of my personal favorite manga artists from this period, Keiko Takemiya. She's actually a teacher at Kyoto Seika University in their manga studies program, and she was the supervising editor behind this collection. I find her dedication to restoring and preserving works from her early years as a manga artist and teaching others really inspiring.

Well, there you have it! Memories to last a lifetime. If you're interested in reading more about the symposium and exhibit, you can do so at the official page here.

Welcome to Backlog Hell aka "What do I play over vacation?"

Ah yes, the dreaded backlog... we meet again. Something about the holiday season and my never-ending list of Games I Want to Play (followed closely by Games I Want to Own and Games I Wouldn't Mind Owning) always gets me reminiscing on just how many games I actually own but still have yet to play. I always buy my games with the most honorable of intentions (to play them, of course), but somehow they end up getting lost in the always-growing stack of reviews and new games I also Want to Play.

I'm not going to count each and every game in my backlog because a) the result would undoubtedly be really depressing and b) I don't think that would be all that productive. What would be productive, however, is to set a clear goal of what I'd like to play over the upcoming holiday. With that in mind, I surveyed my shelf and chose six games I bought/received over the past year that I feel drawn to play for one reason or another. The lucky titles are: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Atelier Annie: Alchemists of Sera Island, The Legendary Starfy, Grand Knights History (JP), Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and Fossil Fighters

How could I resist such an adorable chubby star?
Now, it's time to set a few goals. I've got nearly 3 weeks of vacation over the holiday break and two 20-hour flights to endure. I'm not sure what would be realistic, but I'd like to think I could play at least two games over that period. Since I need to be conscious of what I'm bringing with me from a space/weight standpoint, I'm going to rule out Grand Knights History and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together because of the UMD Factor, which of course would mean I'd need to bring my PSP along for the ride.

I don't even know how I'd transport UMDs...
From the looks of things, it's going to be a a very DS-centric trip! I'll probably cross Atelier Annie off the list due to the RPG Factor, which means it would take considerably more time to beat than non-RPG titles.

I share my nickname with the protagonist of the game, though...
So, that leaves me with three games: The Legendary Starfy, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, and Fossil Fighters. Where should I start? Is it reasonable to try and beat these three over the break, or should I whittle the list down to two? Do you have any games in your backlog you want to play through over the holidays? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Bonus: Fossil Fighters scores a place on this list solely for the Dinosaur Factor and the Awesome Character Designs Factor. Case in point:

Memos from Mamemura: Week 4

This week was a relatively low-key week in Mamemura. Even my secretary Shizue was looking a little less chipper then usual:

But that doesn't mean I didn't get anything done! I've been diligently visiting Mamemura every day, and not only did the shoe shop finally get built, but Nook's store received an upgrade, as well!

If you look closely, you can see a certain villager in Nook's store, as well! Can you guess who it is?

Guess who moved in? It's Doremi, the deer who camped in my village last week! What a quaint little house she has!

Since Christmas is coming up, all of the villagers are telling me what they're wishing for. Frill here wants something green. Funny, I would've pinned her for more of a black or purple sort of gal, especially considering her taste in home decor...

Why, look who it is! Dr. Shrunk appeared one morning saying he wanted to open a club in my town, and that if I could get 6 signatures from other villagers, they'd start construction immediately. Of course I made it a priority to get those signatures, and a few days later, Club 444 was open and ready for business!

How do you like my Santa outfit? I've been trying to collect the various pieces as they show up in the shops. So far I have the boots, shirt, hat, and even beard (not wearing it in the above image, obviously). I just need the matching pants!

Oh, Lisa's husband Kazio finally woke up! He has a really fun way of speaking, I can't wait to see how they localize it. He can refurbish your furniture for you, but I haven't tried it yet.

Poor Doremi's caught a cold, and I've fed her medicine two days in a row with no sign of her getting better. I wonder if villagers are more likely to get sick in the winter?

Well, that concludes this week in Animal Crossing: New Leaf! As always, feel free to ask me any questions you might have about the game in the comments!

Chic Pixel's 2nd Annual Holiday Giveaway

In honor of the holiday season, I have some exciting news! I have not one, but two awesome prizes to give away to my readers! All you have to do is comment on this post and let me know which prize you'd like to go in the drawing for:

1) A copy of Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary
This is a Japanese game, so all text is in Japanese, but it should be relatively straightforward if you're familiar with Puyo Puyo or don't mind fumbling around until you get the hang of things. Remember, it's playable on all DS and 3DS models regardless of region (3DS is only region-locked for 3DS games). I absolutely love the Puyo Puyo games and this one is chock-full of content! (not to mention it's drop-dead adorable)

2) A copy of Manga: An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives
This is a great book for anyone interested in manga from a more academic perspective. Essays cover a wide range of subjects from Osamu Tezuka to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, but my personal favorite is a piece titled "The 'Beautiful Boy' in Japanese Girl's Manga" by the wonderful Mark McLelland. Please be considerate of others who may wish to use this resource for academic purposes when choosing this option!

The giveaway will be open until January 4th at 9 pm EST, which may sound like a long time, but I'll be away on vacation until then and won't be able to send out the prizes any sooner. Sorry!

For an additional entry, tweet about the contest and leave a comment here with a link to your tweet so I know you've done so! Participation is open to anyone in the world.

Best of luck to everyone who enters!

Three's no crowd when it comes to a 3DS collection

There's excessive, and then there's "I can't believe you went there" excessive, and I dare say I've crossed some boundary of game collection shame with my latest acquisition: yet another 3DS.

Yes, they all travel with me...
I could give excuses all day as to why I opted to get another 3DS over, say, a certain new Nintendo console, but in the interest of returning to my new copy of Style Savvy: Trendsetters as soon as possible, I'll keep it short: 1) the Japanese 3DS LL is so nice, it's hard to go back to an old model North American 3DS when I go to play my other games and 2) the pink x white version is supposedly going to be a limited release in North America, so I wanted to grab the color while it was still available.

So, suffice it to say, I now have three 3DS's! Will there be a forth in my future? ... I certainly hope not, because that would be really excessive, and I probably wouldn't blog about it even if I did just to maintain a shred of dignity. I will say that though the handheld had a relatively slow start, I'm thoroughly enjoying what the 3DS has to offer now. Between switching back and forth from my copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf to Style Savvy: Trendsetters, I've been keeping myself quite busy over the first week of vacation!

Forgive the cheesy filter, but it's surprisingly fitting here, don't you think?
Unfortunately the holiday season has kept me very busy, so I'll have to cut this post short (don't worry, Memos from Mamemura will return in January, as I don't have a way to upload pictures from my SD card here at my parent's house). I do, however, have one quick question for you all: Do you like "acquisition" posts like these? I recently noticed a comment elsewhere that suggested I was gloating in my Animal Crossing LL post. If anyone ever gets that feeling from anything I write, please inform me, because I really don't want to come across that way. Perhaps sharing pictures and writing about items you've purchased/received can't help but seem a little like gloating, but I'd like to keep as much of that out of my posts as possible! If it means cutting down on gratuitous photoshoots, I can certainly do that (though I doubt I'll ever buy another limited edition item like that again, anyway). Please do let me know what you think, and if you don't like these kind of posts, don't be shy about speaking up. Thank you!

Oh, one last thing: Don't forget to enter my holiday giveaway!

12 Games I Still Need to Play from 2012

As we near the end of the year (some of you will already be in it by the time this post goes live), many gamers use their precious holiday vacation to reflect on the best titles they've played over the past 12 months and rush to complete a few last games before the clock strikes 12 on New Year's Eve. I, of course, have been doing that as well, but I've also become acutely aware of just how many games from 2012 I've yet to play. It's downright overwhelming! As such, I decided to whittle them down to an apt 12 personal must-play games from 2012, along with whether or not I own my picks and how likely I am to play them in 2013. So, without further ado, here are 12 games from 2012 that I have yet to play:

GravityRush
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: High

Considering virtually everyone I know who's played GravityRush has raved about it to the point of dubbing it a "must-play" for all PS Vita owners, it's downright silly that I never got around to it in 2012. In fact, I didn't even get around to purchasing it, but my PS+ account netted me a free copy just the other month that I'm not only extremely grateful for, but I've already gone so far as to download it and play the opening sequence. I fully intended to play it this past month, but unfortunately I just didn't get around to it, so it's definitely high on my list for next year!

SineMora
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: Medium

I don't talk about them very often, but I'm actually pretty fond of shmups, with Einhander being among my favorite PSone games. SineMora wasn't very high up on my "to-buy" list, but a recent Steam sale made me cave (darn those good deals!). I doubt I'll ever beat it since I'm notoriously bad at shmups, but I'll definitely give the first few levels a go sooner rather than later.

CrimsonShroud
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: High

I've never been one for table-top RPGs, which is what CrimsonShroud is said to pay homage to, but I really like the look of this third game from Level-5's Guild01 package. Of course, I'm not one to pass up anything by Yasumi Matsuno (though I still haven't played TacticsOgre...) and I've also heard that this RPG can take less than 10 hours to complete if you don't get screwed over like one Brad Gallaway when it comes to obtaining certain essential random drops, making it a more doable RPG excursion than, say, another FinalFantasy installment. I'm prepared to give this one a go soon, as I've already downloaded it onto my 3DS XL!

The DenpaMen:TheyCame by Wave
In possession: No
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: High

Given that one of my very favorite bloggers, The Gay Gamer, has praised this game inside and out and even named it as his favorite 3DS game of the year, there's no way I can't check it out! Luckily TheDepnaMen looks like it'll be right up my alley, as it's an RPG and a cute one, to boot!

Harvest Moon: A New Beginning
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: Sky high

I kid, but honestly, this is one of the games I was looking forward to the most in 2012, and it's a near miracle that I haven't gotten around to it yet! My mom was sweet enough to preorder me a copy for my birthday, so I even got the adorable plush yak, but I've yet to actually crack it open. I'll chock that up to being a little too preoccupied with Style Savvy Trendsetters this month, but I can guarentee that as soon as I've exhausted that, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning will be next!

Persona 4 Golden
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: High
Can you believe I've never played Persona 4? Well, it's time to remedy that and see what all the talk's about. Part of me thinks it can't be as good as everyone says, but how can I pass up a JRPG with dating sim elements? My lovely husband got me a copy of Persona 4 Golden, so there's no way I can't play it this year.

Xenoblade Chronicles
In possession: No
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: Low

I hate to say I probably won't get to XenobladeChronicles in 2013, but I have to be honest! There's just no way I'll be able to get to everything on this list over the course of the year in addition to all of the new things coming out and trying to tick a few offenders off my ever-present backlog. But since it's considered by many to be one of the best JRPGs of 2012, I have to keep it in mind for an eventual purchase and play.

Kid Icarus: Uprising
In possession: No
Likelihood I'll play it 2013: Low

Now this is a funny one. I've never really been that interested in checking out Kid Icarus: Uprising, and the initial reviews weren't exceptionally positive, but I've heard a lot from people who enjoyed it despite its flaws. Something about its sense of humor looks really fun, too! But again, I'll be honest... Unless I receive this as a present somewhere down the line, I probably won't ever get around to buying or playing it.

Binary Domain
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it this year: Low/Medium

I did something sneaky when it comes to this one: I tried to convince Shaun he'd like to play it and added it to his Amazon wishlist (with his permission, of course) so that he'd get it for Christmas! Now, before you go and say I'm a horrible person, I must remind you that I do suggest many games to Shaun, and he does usually end up liking them (Theatrhythm comes to mind as one I was particularly successful with). While I do personally want to play this, I may just end up watching him play through it and leave it at that.

Persona 4 Arena
In possession: No
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: Low

I certainly don't feel very happy about the whole region-locking debacle that surrounds Persona 4 Arena, but there's no denying that it's a fighting game developed by the same people who made my favorite series of fighters, BlazBlue. If I did ever get Persona 4 Arena, it'd probably be after I got through Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable anyway, which very likely won't be until at least the end of 2013. I guess I can scratch this one of my list! It does look gorgeous, though.

Elminage Original
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: High

Can you belive I won a copy of this harcore dungeon-crawler from The Gay Gamer? I certainly can't, but I'm overjoyed that I did! As such, I'll definitely need to play it and post my impressions, though I'm a tad wary considering it is a little notorious for a steep difficulty level and poor English translation. Regardless, I think it will be a really interesting experience.

The Last Story
In possession: Yes
Likelihood I'll play it in 2013: Medium

Now here's a game I totally didn't expect to purchase anytime soon, even though I've heard many good things about it. Funnily enough, though, I caught it while it was going for only $8 on Amazon... and how could I pass that up?! Still, I'm on the fence about whether or not I shoud prioritize this one this year. I'm open to suggestions, so if you've played it, do try to convice me that it's worth a shot!

So, are there any games you missed from 2012 that you want to play? Do you see yourself playing them anytime soon? Looking at this list, I certainly have my work cut out for me!

Also, please forgive the lack of pictures, but I'm in a rush and on my tablet, and the upload feature doesn't seem to be working... Rather than have this post miss the end of 2012, I'll edit it later and add them in!

I hope you all can forgive the horrible delay in my posting the winners of Chic Pixel's 2nd Annual Holiday Giveaway, but better late than never, right? Let me tell you, jet lag is a killer!

Well, without further ado, here are the winners as determined by the powers of Random.org:

Thanks so much to everyone who entered, and congratulations to the winners! There were 14 entries for Puyo Puyo!! versus a mere 6 for Manga. I wish I could afford to give everyone a prize, but alas, that's all I have for this particular giveaway. A glimpse into my (random) Pokémon collection

Though I have a few other posts currently in the works (including my much-overdue best of 2012 list), yesterday's Pokémon X/Y announcement seemed like the perfect opportunity to whip up another Pokémon goods-related post. This time, however, I won't be gushing over items I don't have, but things from my collection found during my recent trip to my parents' house in the US!

First up is an adorable mini playing card set that came free with a Japanese monthly manga magazine aimed at young girls called Ciao. As you can see, it's actually for a series called Pi Pi Pi Adventure, better known as Magical Pokémon Journeyin the west. I know next to nothing about the series, but I was lucky enough to receive these cards from a friend of my host mom who knew I liked Pokémon. Even though the stamps on the box "ruin" it from a collector's point of view, I love the fact that it was an unwanted item that found a new home with me.

The box is very cute, but the images on the cards themselves just might be cuter:

backs of the cards

I think all of the characters shown on the cards are not random, but actual characters from the manga... Too bad I don't know more about it!

Next up is perhaps one of the coolest random gifts my mom has ever gotten me:

That's right, a remote-controlled Pikachu car! I'm happy to report that it still works after many years of sitting in a box!

I'll tell you, I'm not one for remote-controlled gadgets, but it's a surprising amount of fun to watch a teeny-tiny Pikachu car zoom around the kitchen table. Now, if they made a real car that just looked like it...

It's always quite the adventure to go through my things, and such a pleasant surprise to come up with a few old gems! Now I'm definitely in the mood for Pokémon X/Y's upcoming release this October...

2012 Year in Review: My 5 Favorite Games

$
0
0
I've never been that fond of Game of the Year lists; I find that the vast majority of gamers and gaming outlets tend to focus on the same popular titles that, in all honesty, I have absolutely no interest in. On the other hand, some people out there do have good taste, as is evident by Journey receiving a slew of GotY praise, so not all hope is lost... and I can definitely understand the appeal of rounding up one's favorite games from any given year for the sake of comparison, so to that end I'll be joining the bandwagon (albiet rather late) by naming my five favorite games of 2012. But don't expect any Walking Dead or Mass Effect 3... This is Chic Pixel, after all!

A quick caveat before I continue: This list, of course, only contains games I've actually played. There are probably many more titles I'd probably consider including if I'd had the opportunity to play them over the course of the year!

Also, I have to give props to Tiny Cartridge for inspiring me to add silly gifs (when available) for my picks. I take no credit for the idea!

Pandora's Tower
I really hesitated putting this on my list since it only came out in Japan and PAL territories, but it was by far one of my favorite games of the year, so I'll make an exception. The story, which really only focuses on three characters and centers around the relationship between the protagonist Aeron and his cursed love interest Elena, is a breath of fresh air from epic RPGs spanning continents and have dozens of people to keep track of. Gameplay, while occasionally hair-pullingly frustrating (particularly the boss battles), makes great use of the Wii's motion controls for Aeron's chain-whip weapon, which is both used to fight enemies and traverse through the environments. Add in the fact that there are even some mild dating sim elements that had me raising Aeron and Elena's affection levels in order to unlock a variety of endings, and I can confidently say that Pandora's Tower will go down as one of my favorite action-RPGs of this generation.

This gif never gets old (source)
Style Savvy: Trendsetters
Oh, Style Savvy: Trendsetters. I may have only started playing this game mid-December, but it quickly rose to the top of the 2012 release pile. Who ever thought a fashion game could be so fun? Style Savvy: Trendsetters is a beautifully polished game with a wide range of customization options that will delight any aspiring fashionista or fashion-conscious nerd (that would be me), but it also injects a healthy amount of shop management into the mix to keep prolonged gameplay compelling. Not only that, but the localization is surprisingly good, and I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion! Style Savvy: Trendsetters may not be an epic RPG or artsy social commentary, but it's chock full of content and by far one of the most fun games I played all year. Really, what's more satisfying than convincing a customer to buy a horribly ugly outfit that just about breaks their budget? (What? That's how it's meant to be played, right?)

Journey
When I first played Journey for review earlier this year, I started out very skeptical. Early reviews applauded it as this mind-blowing experience, but when I got to the part about it being only two hours long, I just couldn't believe it. How could a two-hour game change anyone's life? Well, after giving the game a go, I can definitively say it has not changed my life in any way, but it has definitely opened my eyes to the impact a succinct, purpose-driven experience can be. Countless articles have been written about Journey already, so I don't feel the need to ramble on about this particular pick, but suffice it to say I've played through the game three times, got my white cloak and first platinum trophy (okay, it's not that hard), and cried every single time I've reached the summit of the mountain with a companion. Sure, I may be an over-emotional sap at heart, but I think the fact that Journey remains such a compelling, thought-provoking experience even after multiple playthroughs truly speaks to the beauty of the game.

No spoilers here, I just couldn't resist using this gif
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
I was late to the game when it came to 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, but when I finally played it, it immediately became one of my favorite DS titles. The gripping storyline and intriguing characters kept me right on the edge of my seat all the way to the end, so when I heard there was going to be a sequel, I couldn't be more excited. Though sequels don't always improve on the established formula, Virtue's Last Reward fixes all of the issues I had with the first game while maintaining the same suspenseful story and interesting dialogue that made 999 such a joy to play –– in fact, I may even like Virtue's Last Reward's story more than 999's! I certainly wouldn't complain if we saw more entries in the series (I believe they're already working on a 3rd game), as I'm confident Chunsoft will be able to up the ante even further in future installments.

Tokyo Jungle
Tokyo Jungle is, by far, the strangest game I played all year. If you'd told me two years ago that I'd be playing a game in 2012 that involved all manner of animal from Pomeranian to dinosaur running around the streets of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo killing and being killed, I would've called you crazy, but I'm happy to say that's exactly what Tokyo Jungle delivers. It's certainly not the most polished game on this list, but it wins major points for originality and downright awesomeness of concept, as well as being the most engaging multiplayer game I played in 2012. There're few things more fun than taking down horses with cats and trying to outrun lions with a troop of beagles, and while the survival mode and its roguelike elements may have gotten slightly repetitive had I played it alone, being able to team up with my husband was an absolute blast. The fact that games like this are still being made gives me hope that there will always be a place for weird and whacky titles alongside the Call of Dutys and Halos of the world.

And with that, I can say I've officially brought 2012 to an end! Though I can't speak for the more "mainstream" crowd, fans of the niche and odd really had a great selection of titles over the course of the year. Of course, if my "12 Games I Still Need to Play from 2012" list is any indication, there's still a lot left for me to play! Thanks for sticking with me and putting up with my weirdness over the course of the year, and here's to a grand new year filled with blogging, video games, and manga! (hopefully a little more manga)

Feel free to weigh in on what you think of my picks from 2012, but keep in mind that I am Very Serious about this topic and will not accept any opinions that are different from my own! Just kidding.

Introducing the 2013 Beat the Backlog Club

$

Confession: I buy a lot of games. Okay, you all probably knew that already, but it's time for me to own up to my massive, unwieldily backlog. Well, that day – I mean, year – has finally come, and I'm going to invite all of you to join in my pain plan! The task, should you choose to accept it? Play (and beat, if possible) one game from your backlog every month for the entirety of 2013.

Year of the snake, year of the backlog! (source)
I figure the only way I'll ever really make a dent in my overflowing collection of games is to buckle down and force myself to play things, so that's going to be the ongoing theme of 2013. "2013: Year of the Backlog" has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Of course, you don't have to literally join me, you could do so in spirit or just follow along as I chronicle my journey and laugh as I try to cram a 20+ hour game into the last weekend of every month (I'm going to pray, for my sanity, that it doesn't come to this). But, if you're a fellow game hoarder and have a looming backlog you'd like to conquer, by all means, make it your goal to play at least one of them! The more the merrier! It is a club, after all. (Speaking of which, my friend and fellow blogger The Gay Gamer unwittingly pledged his membership with his recent "Bye-bye backlog" post, so we're already at a whopping two members)

There will be just a few (loose) rules:

1) Each month you must start a new game

2) The game must be one you already own

3) Play as much of the game as you want during the month, but try to push yourself to beat it!

4) Share your attempts to clear your backlog with others! This can be on social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook), your own personal blog, or in the comments here!

That's it! Easy, eh? I really want this challenge to be a fun way for everyone to knock a few games off our backlogs without feeling pressured to reach any certain goals. I plan on writing weekly update posts to keep myself honest about my progress, so I encourage anyone who's interested in giving the Beat the Backlog Club (or BBC, for short!) a go to comment with your own progress when those posts go live.

And if you think 12 months sounds a little too overwhelming, why not just start with one and see how it goes? The most important thing is to have fun – I know I won't be losing (too much) sleep over it if don't make my monthly goal.

Just a small sample of games I own but haven't played.
Most of the Wii games were acquired during my trip to the US.
But a backlog-beating plan isn't anything without a list of potential game candidates, right? Luckily, I've come prepared! Here's just a sample of some of the games I'm thinking of tackling over the course of the year: Harvest Moon: A New Beginning 3D, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Rune Factory Frontier, Ghost Trick, Nier, The Last Story, Muramasa: Demon Blade, Gravity Rush, Fossil Fighters, Atelier Annie, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

You know what? That looks downright daunting. Some of these games may just be too long to even attempt to complete in a month, so this list is definitely not set in stone. If anyone has any suggestions as to which of these might be most doable in month (I'm thinking ~20 hours long), please let me know in the comments!

But since it's already mid-January, I've already gotten started on this month's backlog pick: The Legendary Starfy! Okay, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking you heard me talk about attempting to beat Starfy before, right? Well I did, and just recently, at that! Unfortunately I found myself overwhelmed by other things over the holiday break and didn't even really attempt to play it or Ghost Trick and Atelier Annie as was originally planned, hence why they're now on this list. I hope I have enough motivation to make it through them during this challenge!

So, who's with me? I know it's a little late in January already to start playing a game, so if you're interested in joining in, how about choosing a game you played for a while but never got around to beating? Look forward to an update from me next Monday, and happy gaming!

"Play those games! That's an order!"

Japan Envy: Funghi (Nameko) x Hello Kitty

Anyone remember the Touch Detective series for the Nintendo DS? No? Well, if you don't, don't feel bad, as they pretty much went unnoticed by most of the gaming populace. Funnily enough, however, the cute mushroom "mascot" of the game, Funghi, or Nameko in Japanese, has recently taken the nation by storm, and I highly doubt most of the people consuming the plethora of character merchandise actually know where it came from.

Funghi's gotten so popular, in fact, that he's spawned a strangely calming little mushroom cultivation app for mobile devices, as well as a match-three-esque puzzle game that you can play a sample of online here. Very soon, fans will even get to play the puzzle game on their 3DS's! So, while Touch Detective drifts into the unknown, Funghi's superstar status continues to propel him forward. It's funny how some things take off unexpectedly, isn't it?

Funny how a game based solely on the popularity of a minor
character is celebrating developer Success' 35th anniversary
Of course, any cute character that's anyone gets a Hello Kitty crossover at some point or another, and Funghi is no exception. Spurred on by my recent acquisition of a copy of the December 2012 issue of the Japanese version of Seventeen magazine, I thought I'd share some of the weirdly adorable Hello Kitty designs featured in its pages. I think it's pretty obvious by the two page spread and the fact that the free pouch that came with the issue is plastered with Hello Kitty x Funghi that the collaboration has proben to be quite popular with the young female crowd!

Even the bag the freebie comes in is cute! I wonder what the significance of apples is, though... (you'll see more of them later)

Side A of freebie pouch
I always found it a little creepy that the sound Funghi makes is "nnf nnf"...

Side B of freebie pouch

Closeup of the decal on the front. Apparently this marks the first time Hello Kitty has appeared without any clothes on. And what on earth is that thing in the middle?

Two page spread featuring Funghi x Hello Kitty merchandise. Be sure to click on the image to see a larger version!

My favorite thing about the Funghi phenomenon is all the different Funghi varieties there are! I especially like the fuzzy purple Funghi-wearing Hello Kitty shown above.

I should probably actually read the descriptions surrounding all of these illustrations, because I have absolutely no idea what apples and pharaohs have to do with Funghi. Either way, it's pretty cute!

Finally, here's but a small sample of the Funghi x Hello Kitty merchandise available in Japan.

Food for thought/Additional information:
  • Success, the developers of Touch Detective and Touch Detective 2 1/2, did Zoo Keeper and Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja for the DS!
  • Not only can you buy Touch Detectiveand Touch Detective 2 1/2 in English on iOS devices, but Mushroom Garden/Funghi Gardening Kit and Mushroom Garden: European Winter are available for both iOS and Android devices for free! Go check them out! They've taken Japan by storm, and I, too, have been sucked in by the charm of Mushroom Garden: European Winter (I think it has something to do with the snow)
  • The Funghi mobile games are done by a company called Beeworks Games, who also happen to have a Facebook page where they post far too many cute Funghi pictures
  • Alternatively, you could go to the main Funghi website (Japanese only) if you wish to truly understand the reach this weird little mushroom character has

Memos from Mamemura: Weeks 5-9

If you thought I'd given up on my Animal Crossing: New Leaf town Mamemura, well, you thought wrong! I decided to take a little break from the internet over the holidays (for the most part, anyway), but that doesn't mean I stopped playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Weeks 5-9 certainly saw me playing less than previous weeks, but I made sure to stop by for my birthday, Christmas, New Years, village upkeep, and occasional villager schmoozing. But some drama certainly went down while I was "away" –– in fact, I've had not one, but two villagers move out over the past month. I think that's a cue that I need to play more often!

Since this post is going to be quite image-heavy, I'm going to try to keep the descriptions relatively short for the sake of brevity. And don't worry, I'll be going back to a weekly posting schedule starting next week!

The first snow of the year!
One of my favorite things about Animal Crossing is watching the seasons change and enjoying all of the seasonal events. Since I can't enjoy winter in Australia, it's nice to be able to get a taste of it in the game!

The northern lights look surprisingly nice behind my Mermaid house!

My first snow woman of the year. I couldn't resist getting another shot of the northern lights! The night sky always looks amazing in 3D, but it looks even better with all the colors shimmering in the sky.

The salon (Shampoodle) finally opened! Of course, I couldn't resist the chance to dye my character's hair pink.

December 13th was my birthday, so I got to celebrate with my friends in Animal Crossing. Would you believe everyone who showed up at my party were villagers new to New Leaf? Chuuko the mouse held the party at her house, and Author the lion and Frill the sheep tagged along to sing and throw confetti. The above image was right before I blew out the candles, when the lights were still dimmed (yes, you have to blow into the mic to blow out the candles).

I love the feature that allows you to zoom/rotate when inside houses. I got a great shot of Chuuko there on the right!

Playing bingo with a snowman. Look how dapper he is!

Winter Solstice festivities! As you can see, it's only 12:44 pm, but it's already dark. That photo would've been so much nicer if I had invited three people over to take it with me...

Soon...
Of course my December birthday was soon overshadowed by pre-Christmas festivities. Here I am sitting on the DLC stump Nintendo sent out for the occasion, along with various Christmas furniture (these are bought from Nook's this time around) ... and a Virtual Boy. It's a Virtual Boy Christmas!

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf you can dress up in a Santa outfit and trick everyone into thinking you're Santa himself, including Jingle the reindeer, come Christmas Eve. Talk to him and he'll ask you to hand out presents to the villagers! The catch is that during the month of December the townspeople have been dropping hints as to what they want for Christmas... and you have to fulfill their wishes. I even took notes as to what everyone wanted, but I obviously wasn't careful enough, as I delivered more than one present that was less-than-enthusiastically received. I can't say I didn't feel a little bummed when Doremi looked at the shirt I handed her and replied "Uh, this is okay, I guess..."

"Santa, you may have a beard, but you sure look like someone I know..."
Once you're finished delivering the presents, you can return to Jingle to receive a Christmas wreath. Apparently he'll mail you his photograph if you hand out the presents correctly, but, as I said, I screwed up big time with more than one of my deliveries!

Not all's sunshine and roses in Mamemura! Sumi (left) and Chuuko (right) got in some kind of row.

The New Year was preceded by a sad occasion... That's right, my first villager moved out! I'll remember you fondly, Chomoran.

Well, not like I'm going to waste my tears on him! Time to count down to 2013! There was quite the assortment of different colored glow sticks and hats to collect. My favorite combo was the blue glow stick and the yellow hat, pictured above.

Happy New Year!
What fun! Would you believe this was my first time ringing in the New Year with Animal Crossing? I did so as I was watching the ball drop on TV with my family, so I got my fair share of weird comments from them.

Not long into 2013, Author invited himself over to check out my digs. He stood in this corner a good minute... Maybe he caught on to the surveillance camera I had installed?

I love how the camp site turns into an igloo when it's snowy! I wonder who's inside...?

A chicken and a pot of soup! Unfortunately she (he?) didn't decide to move to Mamemura to fill the hole that Chomoran left.

Let's play "Where's Chuuko?"
To round off my month in Mamemura, I have some more sad news...

Frill, my absolute favorite villager, is moving away! I'm shocked! I guess that's what I get for not playing every day. I'll miss her purple striped horns and fluffy black fur... And now I'm down two villagers! I need to step up my game in order to restore Mamemura to its former glory!

If you got this far, congratulations! Thanks for reading and I hope you'll come back for more next week now that I'm back to my regular posting. Remember, if you have any questions about the game, feel free to shoot them my way in the comments!

Beat the Backlog Club: The Legendary Starfy Diary 1

As I mentioned in my Beat the Backlog Club announcement post, I'm cheating a little this month since I didn't get the ball rolling for the BBC project until mid-January. As such, I'm plaything through The Legendary Starfy, a quirky platformer for the Nintendo DS that, admittedly, I started in December. Given that I only played a level or two in 2012, I figured it would serve as a good title to ease me into the idea of playing a game a month.

The Legendary Starfy is a relatively basic platformer, albiet a little easier than the likes of Mario or Rayman, as apparently it's intended for a slightly younger audince. In addition, much of the gameplay takes place under water, which is generally a source of much frustration in other platformers. Gameplay is relatively straightforward, however, with Starfy using his star powers to glide effortlessly through the water and companion Bunston occassionally lending costumes that serve as power-ups.

While Starfy's cuteness hooked me from the start, the rest of the game has been a bit of a mixed bag. I don't play many platformers and as such don't think I can really articulate what I think makes some better over others, but something about Starfy's level design leaves much to be desired. Simply playing through them becomes a bit of a chore, especially since it's all quite easy and the game makes it extremely clear where it wants you to go and how you should go about getting there. The kind of fun and excitement I had playing through Rayman Origins is, unfortunately, not to be found here.

Almost everything can be forgiven in a game this adorable.
In addition, the music is mind-numbingly awful. You can tell the developers wanted to go the "super-cute" route here, too, but it just comes off as being too sugary-sweet and overdone. As a result, I've been playing the game on mute virtually the whole time.

That's not to say Starfy is horrible and that it shouldn't be experienced, but I don't think its charm lies in what traditionally makes platformers fun to play. So far, my favorite aspects of Starfy have actually been in the game's characters and dialogue! We'll see if that's what gets me through the game, or if the gameplay actually gets better later on...

Are you playing a game from your backlog this month? Feel free to share what title you picked and chat about your progress in the comments!

Memos from Mamemura: Week 10

Things may have ended on a sad note last week with my favorite villager Frill moving out, but this week saw some new excitement in the form of a new villager and some multiplayer antics with a friend! And so, my Animal Crossing: New Leaf saga continues...

Whoever this new guy is, he sure has a lot of nerve to build his house so close to the station...

I'm always happy to get different species of animals in my village, so Bunjirou (aka Lobo) came as a pleasant surprise! It's nice to see a familiar Animal Crossing villager face, too, and a cranky one at that! There's something charming about the cranky personality.

I finally saved up enough money to open up the dream center/massage parlor! Let's take a look inside...

Yumemi (which is actually the Japanese word for "to dream" or "dreaming") the aardvark has the ability to take you to visit other people's towns or have others come to your town through your dreams. I didn't get around to setting up the new feature yet (lazy, I know), but look forward to next week when I'll report back on my findings after visiting a couple of villages! The difference between this and normal online play is that you can visit anyone's town, even if you're not friends, as long as you have the code for their village. People are sharing codes for spiffy towns all over the internet, so I should be able to find a couple of good ones! Maybe I'll even go to the official Nintendo town

Did you know that if a villager invites you over to their house and you talk to them enough times, they'll ask if you want to buy any of their items? Well, Arthur wanted to pawn off his Chinese table on me... The very one I gave him as a present! And for 1,920 bells? That's highway robbery!

Low and behold, I go to the recycle shop the next day and find Arthur's put his Chinese table up for sale! Talk about rude!

Moving on from that drama, I met up with my friend Nel and visited her town over local wireless! It was a lot of fun, and I definitely got tons of inspiration for my own town (it's quite evident that she plays much more than I do...). The above image is one of her, er, most disconcerting rooms, as its covered in her favorite character Manbe-kun's likeness.

She's got the full mermaid series...

And the full snowman series! How adorable!

She also has a number of themed rooms, such as this Japanese one...

And this creepy basement room! Eek!

Sumi lives in both our towns, so I wondered what it would be like to have a conversation with another town's Sumi... She just acted like she didn't know me!

Nel's even unlocked the cafe! Here I am drinking the Penguin (her town's name) original blend.

I didn't even know there was bamboo in Animal Crossing: New Leaf! Clearly I need to read more up on this game, or I'm going to miss out. I love how she fashioned this area into a little hot spring getaway. Too bad you can't jump in the water!

Finally, we sat and watched the "end credits" together by her town's tree... For some reason it lost all its leaves! I don't even think I've played enough to see the credits in my game... It's fun to see all the names of the villagers who've lived there scroll by. The music that plays is quite soothing, as well!

I must say, visiting Nel's town has really rekindled my interest in the game... There very well may be another reason for that, but I'm going to save that for an upcoming post! Thanks for reading, and remember that you can ask any questions you may have in the comments!

No, Thank You!!!: A BL game with bears?!

While I was doing some research for my thesis (yes, really), I stumbled onto a rather interesting upcoming boys love game called No, Thank you!!!. Why is it so interesting, you ask? Behold:

Whoa, there! Who got chest hair and massive pecks in my BL game?!
Now, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but the above photo is probably the closest I've ever seen any from of BL media come to depicting a bear. And the man in the above image isn't the only bear-like character in No, Thank You!!!:

These burly manly men are far from what you normally see in BL media, which generally feature lanky, often effeminate "pretty boys," so who exactly is this game being marketed towards? Well, the official website explicitly states that it is a "boys love adventure game," and it has been featured in a number of magazines aimed at BL game fans, so we can rule out the possibility of it being an advent-guarde bara game (bara being a term used for media with homosexual characters that is aimed at a male homosexual audience). The men above certainly look like they could've been pulled straight out of a bara magazine, though!

Of course, not all of the characters are bears –– the two pictured above are pretty standard BL fare, in my opinion (main protagonist is the one with the black hair), but the game's' premise is that all of the characters are actually semes (tops), which are generally considered to be the masculine/dominant men in a BL romantic pairing. This leaves me to wonder if the creators decided to inject a little bara into their BL game, as there are a small number of BL/yaoi fans that like bara, as well. Or, you could argue that perhaps they're trying to hook in the regular bara-loving crowd. Either way, I love to see different types of characters portrayed in these kind of games!

A funny result of the addition of muscly men into a BL setting is that some more "traditional" fans will likely balk at the sight of body hair. No, Thank You!!! has covered its bases, offering a special "body hair on/off" button that allows players to change the on-screen hair levels instantaneously! How cool (and totally weird) is that? I guess everyone wins... except for some of the men:
source
You can probably tell what's going on in the above mini-manga (aka 4-koma) without a translation, but in case you're interested:
Panel one: CUT! "Okay, good job guys!"
Panel two: "Next we'll do the without-body hair version!" "Okay!"
Panel four: "It––" "It––" "It––" "...was just a dream!"
Bottom: The body hair is up to you.

I'd be really interested hear from both bear/bara fans and BL fans about what they think abou this game! It's scheduled for a Japanese PC release sometime this spring. If you're interested in seeing more images/learning more about the game, head to the official site here (be warned, some content on the site is NSFW!).

Note: It's come to my attention that my first example might be more appropriately be described as a "muscle bear." I hope no one is offended by how I've used the term – I just wanted to point out that these are the most bear-like characters I've ever seen in a BL game, whereas bara media depicts characters that could easily be labeled as "bears" all the time.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf My Design Extravaganza

I mentioned in my last Memos from Mamemura post that I'd rekindled my love for Animal Crossing: New Leaf after a bit of a slump over the holidays, and let me tell you, I am 100% back down the rabbit hole. What could be responsible? Well, for one, I've discovered the realm of "My Design" blogs!

An old-school Dragon Quest-themed town!?
They even have tiles for towns and castles! (source)
My Design, of course, refers to the ability to make custom patterns for everything from shirts to sign posts in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and share them via QR codes. There are literally hundreds of talented people all over the internet creating all manner of amazing and adorable things! It's hard not to be impressed by the sheer talent these people possess. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

Adorable, and very pink! (source)
Look at the detail they've put into the scarf and camera! (source)
This is just perfect for Valentine's Day (source)
So many gorgeous dress designs! (source)
The creator of this one did both the lace pattern and dress! (source)
These Ghibli-inspired designs go wonderfully with the mushroom furniture (source)
There really are so many amazing blogs and sites; it would be impossible to list all of them here. But, for the curious, I highly advise going to this page that catalogs the highest-ranked Animal Crossing: New Leaf My Design blogs and check out some of the top hits! Alternatively, this site is chock-full of links to anime/game-related My Designs.

Unfortunately, it's hard to say whether or not these  will be compatible with the English release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The Gay Gamer tells me Denpa Men QR codes made in Japan were not compatible with other regions, which is a little disheartening, but hopefully Nintendo realizes the importance of players being able to share their creations and doesn't restrict QR code recognition to copies of the game from the same region. But, even if they aren't compatible, I have no doubt an ample English QR community will arise with just as much talent as the Japanese one! We'll just have to wait and see...

Note: I have not posted any QR codes here because most, if not all, Japanese bloggers specifically request that their QR codes not be shared on other sites. If you're interested in getting the QR codes for use in your Japanese copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, please go to the source links under the images!

Beat the Backlog Club: Introducing February's Pick + First Impressions

So, we're nearly two weeks into February and I'm only just now getting around to announcing what game from my backlog I'll be tackling over the course of the month... My efforts for the Beat the Backlog Club are off to a great start, eh? In fact, I'm still hard at work on my January pick, The Legendary Starfy! (more on that in a future post... I'm determined to finish it!)

But the show must go on, and it's my hope that as the months go by I'll eventually start adhering to some semblance of a schedule and complete my target of 12 games by January 1, 2014. So, what lucky game will be the focus of my attention this month? It's actually a relatively recent addition to my backlog... Harvest Moon: A New Beginning!

I was very much looking for a low-key game for the month, as I've also been tasked with reviewing Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, so I did an informal poll on Twitter to see what people would like to see more: Harvest Moon: A New Beginning or Fishing Resort. I honestly wasn't very surprised to see Harvest Moon smash Fishing Resort out of the water, so I happily picked it up and began farming away on my pink x white 3DS XL (by the way, I'll still be doing Fishing Resort later this year, so the three of you who voted for it have something to look forward to).

In all honesty, I haven't gotten much farther than creating my character and going through the initial tutorials, but I do have a few initial impressions to share:

✄ It's very satisfying to finally be able to make your own customized character! This is the first time players have been able to choose what their character looks like in a Harvest Moon game, and I have to say I'll be disappointed if the option doesn't return in future titles.

✄ I know this is a very individual thing, but I'm not very fond of the game's art style. Not only do I not really like any of the character designs (okay, some of them, especially the animals, are pretty cute), but the 3D models of both the characters and the scenery look very blah, in my opinion. Perhaps it's because I've been playing too much Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but the color scheme doesn't gel with me very well, and I keep wishing the whole thing just, well, looked nicer.

✄ Gameplay-wise, it's very standard Harvest Moon fare, so I know I will enjoy that aspect. I can't wait to be able to customize my character's clothing and house and get an adorable llama!

The llama's the one with the pompador!
For the curious, I'm playing as a girl named Appi with a very trendy cropped pink haircut who owns Yumyum Farm. As for my bachelor of choice (because we all know marriage is the most important thing in Harvest Moon), I might go for Amir or Soseki... Depending on how I go I might even swing for that jerk Allen, just because the things he says are so hilariously awful!

Stay tuned for another update in approximately a week's time, and let me know what game you're playing from your backlog in the comments!

I've got me an Animal Crossing: New Leaf bible

$

I've been hinting in my recent Animal Crossing: New Leaf posts that a number of factors brought me "back" to the game after a bit of a hiatus over the winter holidays, but I've been keeping one very important influence tightly under wraps. In the interest of not spamming everyone with too many Animal Crossing: New Leaf posts all at once, I decided to hold back on revealing my wild card, but with the wonderful news that the game will be hitting North America on June 9th, I thought it high time I share what's got me so excited!

What's that you've got there, Goldie? Hold on...

It's an Animal Crossing: New Leaf guide book! Would you believe my friend Nel gave me one of hers What a wonderful present! I can honestly say it's one of the most adorable books I own, and now I don't have any excuse not to do research on in-game items or how to build snowmen properly.

Would you believe me if I told you that it's literally bible-sized? (not that I've held many bibles...) Well, take a look at how it stacks up to my other Japanese game guide books:

There you have it – it's larger than the Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary Ultimania File 3: Battleand totally dwarfs the Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Townguide!

Though there are a number of Animal Crossing: New Leaf guide books on the market, this one is well-known for its intuitive cataloging system. For one, it displays all of the villagers by species on the first pages:

Ack! Why are they all so cute?!
It also has a great section where it tells you all about what you can do over the course of a year, month by month! Holidays, fishing, bug catching... they all have their own specific sections, but I love how I can turn to the current month and quickly see what's in store for me:

Each individual section is neatly – and adorably, I might add – organized. Here's just one example from the first page of the segment on Brewster's Café:

Oh, and the book also comes with special exclusive QR codes! My favorites are the Shizue outfit and the various Nintendo-related designs:

The book even has a section on holidays that it claims will be exclusive to other regions! It specifically says players may need to trade with people from other regions, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that'll be possible come June 9th (I want you all to come visit my town!).

More items from international holidays:

Of course, you could spend hours looking at the pages and pages of unique furniture to be found in the game:

The guide book also comes with a mini book that you can carry around for added convenience  It's much smaller and just lists all of the furniture, bugs, fish, fossils, etc. in the game. Check out this adorable cover:

And here's a sample page. So many items!

And last but not least... swimsuits!

That red and white striped one will be mine someday...
And there you have it! I couldn't be happier with this book, and it never even crossed my mind to purchase one for myself. Many thanks again to Nel for the wonderful present, and if anyone wants additional photos or has any questions, feel free to ask!

Why am I still playing The Legendary Starfy?

$

Last I checked it was nearing the end of February, but for some reason I'm still playing my January Beat the Backlog Club pick, The Legendary Starfy! If you read my initial impressions, they weren't all that positive, so you'd be forgiven if you were skeptical of my choice to continue with the game. Well, it all comes down to one very important detail: I'm extremely stubborn.

Wish I could say I was having as much fun as these
gals are! (source)
That's not to say the game isn't fun – the environments have become exponentially more interesting as I've progressed through the game, and the characters and dialogue continue to be an adorable treat. Actually playing it doesn't quite live up to the idea of playing it, but I've gotten to the point where I just won't feel satisfied until I can say "yeah, I beat it."

Does this mean my February BBC pick, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, will suffer? I have to admit, it already has. What little time I've spent away from Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Ni no Kuni has generally gone to The Legendary Starfy, mostly because it's much easier to get through a quick level of that than trudge through more boring tutorials Harvest Moon: A New Beginning (that should make it glaringly obvious how early in the game I still am...). I'm not sure what this will mean for my Beat the Backlog Club project, but I'm not ready to give up now!

Anyway, let's get back to The Legendary Starfy. Here are a few reasons why I just can't stop playing it:

absurdly adorable takoyaki minigame
collectable Starfy costumes
everything just keeps getting cuter...
... Correct me if I'm wrong, but Starfy is starting to sound eerily like a significant other you really don't have anything in common with but can't leave because they're just too good looking (or heart-meltingly cute, in this case). Regardless of the moral implications of my sojourn with Starfy, I'm content to see the game through to the end, but I won't be sticking around for any sidequests or 100% completion nonsense. Will I finish it before the end of February? Time will tell...

Bonus photos:

Starfy's idle animation is him whipping out a sleeping bag and going to bed right in the middle of the level!

Pretty much what the screen looks like 100% of the time I'm playing the takoyaki minigame.

Fabulous Finds: Japanese Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire

Now here's a game I never thought twice about picking up before now: Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire. Not that I have anything against the game, but as I've mentioned in the past, my time with the GBA has been very limited. After recently becoming enamored with the beauty that is Japanese GBA box art, however, I've spent my fare share of time perusing eBay for import titles that catch my fancy... and catch my fancy Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire did. One look at the cover and I knew I just had to have it!

Now, I'm not really a fan of pinball games, mainly because I don't really understand the mechanics around pinball itself, but that doesn't make this box art (and the in-game graphics themselves) any less appealing! I'll be sure to actually give the game itself a spin on my GB micro in the near future, but for now I'll stick to gushing about this adorable acquisition of mine:

Kecleon is such a neat Pokémon – I love that he got featured on the front of
the box!

I can't believe how much detail is put into some Japanese GBA boxes. Not only is the GBA logo very unassuming, unlike what they did with the North American and European GBA cases, but nearly every side of the box has cute little touches, such as the Spheal and Sealeo shown above.

And there's a Pikachu and Pichu on the other side!
Would you believe the inside flaps even have pictures on them? Take a look at this:

Such loving detail!
Let me remind you that this is a used copy of the game, but as everything that comes from Japan, it arrived in near-immaculate condition. It's almost as if it was never opened...

Even the original fliers were left intact! I love little relics of the past such as these; it's so fun to look at what they were advertising back in 2003.

Side A
Side B
I have to say, I'm really enamored by the art style used to depict the Pokémon in this game! It's very similar to a lot of the Pokémon Center art. The Pikachu looks a lot like the Pikachu design used on the recent 3DS XL, for example.

I'm a little worried that pinball might be a bit tough to see on the micro's tiny screen, but I'm determined to give it a shot! If all else fails, I can always switch over to my DS lite, after all. Expect a report on how it actually plays in the very near future!

Oh, and what do you think of my new title, "Fabulous Finds"? I've been trying to think of a way to unify my "acquisition" posts for a while now. I've finally settled on Fabulous Finds, so I hope you all like it!
